Anxiety & Overfunctioning in High-Performing Women
When the vigilance that made you dependable stops switching off.
Understanding the concern
Anxiety is a recognized clinical concern involving persistent worry, physiological arousal, and avoidance or overcontrol. Overfunctioning is a relational pattern: consistently doing more than your share — anticipating, managing, rescuing, correcting — so that nothing falls apart.
The two frequently reinforce one another. Anxiety makes taking over feel safer than waiting; taking over reduces the anxiety briefly and teaches everyone that you will.
How it may show up
- Mentally rehearsing conversations before and after they happen
- Difficulty delegating, then resentment at carrying it alone
- Perfectionism that costs far more time than the standard requires
- Trouble sleeping because your mind won't stop scanning
- Physical tension, restlessness, or a chronically tight chest
- Saying yes immediately, regretting it privately
- Feeling responsible for other adults' emotions and outcomes
- Discomfort with rest that isn't earned
Why it gets missed
Because it is rewarded. Overfunctioning is praised at work, relied upon at home, and often reinforced in ministry. Anxiety in high-performing women can present as exceptional preparation rather than visible distress, so it rarely gets named as anxiety at all.
How therapy may help
Assessment clarifies whether an anxiety disorder is present and what maintains it. Treatment draws on established, evidence-based approaches for anxiety and may address tolerance for uncertainty, cognitive patterns, and the physiology of arousal.
The relational work runs alongside it: boundaries practiced rather than announced, allowing other people to hold their own responsibilities, tolerating the discomfort of letting something be imperfect, and grieving the identity that formed around being the one who never drops anything.
