Therapy for American Women Living Abroad
You Built a Life Somewhere New. You Still Deserve a Place Where You Feel Understood.
Whole-person therapy for eligible American women navigating the emotional, relational, and identity shifts that can come with living abroad.

Living abroad can be beautiful, expansive, and deeply meaningful.
It can also be lonely, disorienting, exhausting, and far more emotionally complicated than anyone prepared you for.
You may genuinely love the life you’ve built and still miss the ease of being somewhere familiar. You may be thriving professionally while struggling personally. You may be surrounded by people and still feel like no one quite understands the version of you that existed before you arrived.
And if you were already the woman everyone depended on before you moved, changing countries doesn’t necessarily change that.
Sometimes it simply changes the environment in which you’re carrying it all.
You Can Love Your Life Abroad and Still Find It Hard.
There is a particular kind of pressure that can come with choosing a life that other people see as exciting.
You moved abroad. Maybe for your career. Your spouse’s career. Military life. Ministry. Family. Adventure. Opportunity. Retirement. Or simply because you knew there was something more you wanted to experience.
And maybe much of it really is good.
That can make it harder to admit when parts of it are not.
You can be grateful and homesick.
Confident and lonely. Successful and exhausted.
Excited about who you’re becoming while grieving pieces of the life or identity you left behind.
You may also discover that the support systems you once took for granted are no longer easily accessible. Family is several time zones away. Friendships change. Familiar cultural cues disappear. Your relationship may carry pressures it didn’t have at home. Even ordinary things can require more thought and energy.
None of that means moving abroad was a mistake.
It means transition has a cost, even when the transition is something you chose.
When You’re Still the One Holding Everything Together
For high-performing women, living abroad can add another layer to an already full life.
You’re not only managing work, family, relationships, leadership, caregiving, or the mental load you’ve always carried.
Now you may also be navigating a different culture, rebuilding community, managing relationships across time zones, learning new systems, helping your family adjust, and figuring out where you belong in all of it.
You can remain remarkably capable while becoming increasingly depleted.
That’s an important distinction.
Sometimes the question isn’t “Why can’t I handle this?” It is “What is this season requiring from me—and have I made room for what I need within it?”
Sometimes You Need a Space Where You Don’t Have to Explain Everything.
There can be relief in talking with someone who understands the cultural context you came from while helping you make sense of the life you’re building now.
Your therapy shouldn’t require you to separate your emotional health from your identity, relationships, responsibilities, faith, culture, body, or season of life.
For Black women and other women of color living abroad, there may be additional questions around race, visibility, belonging, cultural connection, beauty, identity, family expectations, or what it means to experience yourself differently in another part of the world.
Those experiences deserve room too.
REIGNITE offers a space to bring the whole story.

Can I Work With Shannon While Living Abroad?
Possibly—and you shouldn’t have to figure that out on your own.
REIGNITE offers international psychotherapy only to U.S. citizens who meet the practice’s additional eligibility requirements.
Because therapy requirements can differ depending on where you are physically located, Shannon also needs to review your current country, residency, clinical needs, and—when applicable—insurance before confirming that therapy can begin.
We’ve made that process easier.
Answer a few questions below and we’ll help you determine your most appropriate next step.
Am I Eligible for Therapy While Living Abroad?
A Quick 2–3 Minute Questionnaire to Help Us Determine Your Next Best Step.
Finding the right therapist while living abroad can already feel complicated. Figuring out where to begin shouldn't be another thing you have to carry.
Tell us a little about where you are and what you’re looking for.
Based on your responses, we’ll help you determine whether your next step should be an International Therapy Fit Consultation, Capacity Restoration Coaching, a Capacity Restoration Intensive, or another type of clinical support.
This questionnaire provides preliminary screening only. It does not establish therapy eligibility, create a therapist-client relationship, provide a diagnosis, or guarantee insurance coverage.
Your answers to this preliminary questionnaire are used only to determine the next step shown on your screen and are not saved by this website.

Need More Than a Traditional Session?
Sometimes the work you need to do deserves more room.
The REIGNITE™ Capacity Restoration Intensive is a private four-hour immersive experience designed to create protected space for deeper reflection, assessment, meaningful therapeutic or coaching work, and integration.
Two distinct pathways are available.
Therapy Intensives may be available to eligible American women living abroad after an individual international therapy eligibility review.
Coaching Intensives are available worldwide when coaching is the appropriate scope of service.
If you’re living abroad and believe you may need the Therapy Intensive pathway, begin with the International Therapy Fit Questionnaire above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About Therapy While Living Abroad
Can I receive therapy from Shannon while living abroad?
Possibly. REIGNITE provides international psychotherapy only to U.S. citizens who meet the practice's additional eligibility requirements. Because requirements differ depending on where you're physically located, we'll review your circumstances before confirming therapy.
The quickest way to start is the Therapy While Living Abroad questionnaire above.
Why does it matter what country I'm in?
Psychotherapy is a licensed professional service, and different countries and jurisdictions may have different requirements. Shannon reviews your location before services begin so you don't have to figure this out by yourself.
Do I have to be a Texas or New Jersey resident?
Texas or New Jersey residency is an important part of REIGNITE's screening process, but residency alone does not determine whether international therapy can be provided. Your physical location and other circumstances must also be reviewed.
Can I use my U.S. insurance?
Possibly. REIGNITE participates with select Aetna and Optum-affiliated plans, but coverage outside the United States varies. Your particular benefits must be verified, and coverage is not guaranteed.
Can I private pay if my insurance won't cover international therapy?
Potentially. Private pay may be available when therapy is otherwise legally and clinically appropriate. Paying privately does not override applicable practice requirements.
What if I'm not a U.S. citizen?
REIGNITE currently limits its international psychotherapy services to U.S. citizens who meet the practice's other eligibility requirements.
Capacity Restoration Coaching may be available worldwide when coaching is appropriate for your needs.
What if I travel or move to another country during therapy?
Tell Shannon before your next session. Because requirements can change based on your physical location, REIGNITE may need to confirm that services can continue from the new location.
Are Intensives available while I'm living abroad?
Potentially. Coaching Capacity Restoration Intensives are available worldwide when coaching is appropriate.
Therapy Intensives for American women living abroad require the same international therapy eligibility review as other psychotherapy services. If you're unsure which pathway fits, start with the questionnaire above.
Is coaching available internationally?
Yes. Capacity Restoration Coaching is available worldwide when your goals and needs are appropriate for a non-clinical coaching relationship.
Is REIGNITE only for Christian women?
No. REIGNITE is grounded in Christian principles and welcomes women from different backgrounds. Explicit faith integration is based on the client's preferences and goals.
